With its timeless look, the self portrait photograph of this guy could have been taken this morning by holding his iphone at arms length. The aviators, the scarf and fatigue jacket, the high–and–tight haircut. In fact it wasn’t taken today — it was shot in 1961 - and the guy in the photo is the original gonzo–journalist, Hunter S. Thompson. more.
A decade before he would become famous for his exposés in Rolling Stone magazine and his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Thompson lived in Big Sur, California. He worked as a security guard and caretaker at the Big Sur Hot Springs for an eight month period in 1961. While there, he wrote an article on the local artisan and bohemian culture that was published in Rogue magazine. (Jack Kerouac was there during this period as well to escape his post–On The Road fame in New York and “write poetry about the sea.”). more.
Anyone recently embarrassed by an old photograph of himself sporting a Simon Le Bon haircut and a mock turtleneck, should take a cue from Hunter S. Thompson: Save the regret. Stay classic. more.
Love this quote from Thompson:
“This is the way life goes in Big Sur. Waiting for the mail, watching the sea–lions in the surf or the freighters on the horizon, sitting in the tubs at Hot Springs, once in a while a bit of drink — and, most of the time, working at whatever it is that you came here to work on, whether it be painting, writing, gardening or the simple art of living your own life.” more.
